NORFOLK CHAPTER VIRGINIA SOCIETY SAR

"Virginia's Premier Chapter"

Serving Virginia Society Compatriots
in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Virginia Beach, Isle of Wight and Virginia's Eastern Shore... from border to border and "sea to sea..." to North Carolina in the south, Maryland in the north and eastward from the reaches of the Chesapeake Bay.

We are the Sons of the American Revolution in the history-rich geographic region of Tidewater Virginia, historic home to the Adam Thoroughgood House, the Battle of the Capes, the Battle of Great Bridge, the Battle of Kemps Landing, the Burning of Norfolk, the Francis Land House, the Lynnhaven House and Saint Paul's Episcopal Church ("the church by the mall with the ball in the wall"), the only remaining structure to survive the burning by its residents and the coordinated bombardment of Lord Dunmore's Fleet on New Year's Day 1776.

In a letter to compatriots residing in Tidewater who were members of other chapters, the Honorable William Moultrie Guerry, Judge of Norfolk's Circuit Court and President of our Chapter from 1994 to 1998, wrote "Ours is the Premier Chapter of the Virginia Society, having been first chartered on April 20, 1906 as 'Tidewater Chapter, No. 1' (VASSAR).  We are proud that a former member, Compatriot A. H. Foreman [after whom Old Dominion University's football field was named], was the first Virginian to serve the National Society as President General."

To date, the Norfolk Chapter has produced two Presidents General; the second, Reon G. Hillegass, Jr., who passed away in July 2011, was remembered on a plaque our Chapter dedicated with the Culpeper Minutemen Chapter on December 3, 2011 to memorialize both Thomas Marshall and his son John, both of whom were at the Battle of Great Bridge on December 9, 1775; the latter, having later served our country as the 4th (and longest-termed) Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.

For more information about joining our Chapter and its distinguished membership, please
visit our "Welcome (Home)" links in the drop down menu of the navigation pane.  There is only one requirement - you must prove you descend from a Patriot who served the American cause during the approved period of the Revolutionary War.
